Among the list of the most important jobs to be done at the beginning of the season, there is always the maintenance of the hull at the top<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Every year it is always the same story: before launch, the hull must be redone by removing the old antifouling layer and applying a new one.<\/p>\n

However, the time comes when it is necessary to carry out total restoration work<\/strong> on the hull, removing all the layers of antifouling that have been applied over the years and which negatively affect the consumption and performance of the boat.<\/p>\n

For very performing boats – both motor and sailing – the zero treatment must be performed with greater frequency since the finish of the hull affects performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is advisable to bring the hull back to zero also to be able to check for any structural damage to the hull or to check for osmosis.<\/p>\n

The evaluation of the timing of how often to do this job<\/strong> depends on the number of overlapping antifouling layers, how the hull was treated before the periodic annual refurbishment, and\/or if you decide to use a completely different antifouling product.<\/p>\n

Warning: Always remember that removing all the antifouling <\/strong>is a very accurate operation, it is important to leave the boat in professional <\/strong>hands. It is about performance and safety in navigation. <\/strong><\/p>\n

From a practical point of view, the steps to restore the hull<\/strong> are as <\/strong>follows:<\/p>\n

– Thoroughly clean the hull<\/strong>: this operation is carried out using a hydro cleaner, useful for removing the layers of vegetatio<\/strong>n and dog teeth<\/b>\u00a0formed during the period in the water.<\/p>\n

– Remove the layers of antifouling<\/strong>: depending on the condition of the hull, a mechanical (with a sander) or chemical (with the use of a paint remover) method can be used to remove the antifouling residues layers deposited over the years. <\/strong>It will be the professional in charge of the work to evaluate the correct technique.<\/p>\n

– Prepare the substrate<\/strong>: antifouling paints need a surface to “cling” to, so a primer must first be applied. Usually, two or three coats of the product are passed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Apply the new antifouling<\/strong>: at this point,<\/strong> the hull is ready for the new antifouling, which will prevent the formation of organisms on the hull.<\/p>\n

Now the hull will be like new, ready to sail under the best conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n
