ANODES FOR BOAT

What are the anodes and why are they essential?

Anodes are essential components for the protection of the boat from galvanic corrosion. These are zinc or aluminium elements designed to oxidise in place of the more sensitive metals of the hull, engine and other components immersed in salt or sweet water.

How do anodes work?

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different metals come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte, such as sea or lake water. The anodes, being composed of less noble metals, are gradually consumed protecting the metal parts of the boat.

What type of anode should be chosen?

The choice of material depends on the type of environment in which your boat is sailing:

  • Zinc Anodes: Ideal for salt water, they offer excellent durability and protection.
  • Aluminium Anodes: Perfect for both salt water and fresh water, lighter and more resistant than zinc.

Where to install the anodes?

The anodes should be strategically positioned to ensure effective protection. Key points include:

  • Axis line and propellers
  • Outboard engine columns and stern feet
  • Hull and rudder
  • Flaps and catches at sea

How often to replace the anodes?

The anodes wear out over time and must be checked periodically. It is recommended to check the condition at least once a year and replace them when consumption exceeds 50%.
